Pirati Ciclisti Antifascisti!

30.04 – 27.05.2026

An Exhibition about Viennese Countermovements in the Fields of Sports

The exhibition PIRATI CICLISTI ANTIFASCISTI! explores Viennese subcultures and counter-movements in the field of sports.

The group show revolves around initiatives, associations and artists who advocate for diversity, tolerance, and social participation. Contributions present creative forms of resistance – against racist and patriarchal discrimination, stereotypical body politics and the neoliberal commodification of public spaces.

At the intersection of sportive and artistic movements, a collectively narrated counter-history emerges, spanning soccer fields and bicycle clubs, DIY culture, and solidarity networks.

The chant “Pirati Ciclisti Antifascisti!” tells a story of Viennese sports history that spans subculture, soccer fields, cycling clubs, anti-fascism, and a special kind of left-wing local patriotism. When the slogan rings out today at the Wiener Sport Club (WSC), it serves as both an anti-fascist statement and a nod to the club’s own history:

In 1883, cyclists affiliated with the rowing club “Pirat” founded the Vienna Cyclists’ Club, which later (in union with other clubs of the “Vienna Sports Association”) evolved into the WSC in 1907.

Today, the WSC is a Viennese institution. It’s soccer field in Vienna’s 17th district (including the “Friedhofstribüne” vis a vis the Dornbach cemetery) enjoys cult status throughout Vienna. Until recently, it was the oldest continuously used soccer field in Austria. Over the past two years, the historic stadium has been renovated and large sections rebuilt.

To mark the reopening, we invite you to a guided tour through the new stadium, together with the fanclub “Freund*innen der Friedhofstribüne” (“Friends of the Graveyard Terrace”).

The tour focuses on the history of the fanculture and fanclub. Come on, Sport-Club!

On Reclaiming Space

Talk & tour through the exhibition with Schwimmverein Donaukanal, BRAV Magazin & Umdi Tischtenniskultur Wien

Free entry!

Join us for a themed tour through the exhibition. We will walk & talk with three initiatives: About creative and sportive strategies of reclaiming public space. About urban struggles and utopian desires.

Schwimmverein Donaukanal– The Schwimmverein Donaukanal is part of the global “Swimmable Cities” movement that aims to make urban waterways (rivers, canals, and harbors) safely accessible to the public for swimming. Since 2020, there has been a non-commercial community that uses and shapes the Donaukanal as an open, solidaric space for swimming in Vienna. The members advocate for the canal to become a place for everyone – regardless of body, background, age, or experience. The vision: by 2035, everyone in Vienna knows someone who has voluntarily (and happily) swum in the Donaukanal.

BRAV Magazin – is a queer-feminist skate magazine that operates at the intersection of skateboarding and similar freestyle sports, design, and art. The print magazine is published once a year and is edited by a small group of FLINTA* individuals. Most of the articles are written by people from the Austrian and German-speaking scene and offer a glimpse into a feminist, self-organized, and creative skate scene. The magazine promotes artists from the community and strengthens international exchange and networking.

Umdi Tischtenniskultur Wien – is a park association that combines sports and culture with the goal of promoting table tennis in Vienna’s parks. The association is part of a growing street table tennis scene that has gained popularity in recent years. Through its activities, Umdi aims to strengthen democratic coexistence in the city and help shape public spaces. After all, encounters at the table can help break down prejudices and overcome barriers: whether young or old, beginner or professional player, the ping pong tables in Vienna’s parks offer many people the opportunity to engage in physical activity and connect with others.
