Vienna 2025, 1st limited Edition Pirate Cultures Vienna is dedicated to artistic and cultural approaches in Vienna that aim to reclaim not only physical urban spaces but also digital, virtual and technological spheres. The anthology contains a series of articles by local representatives from various disciplines. Artists, activists, hackers, researchers and media makers were invited to share their approaches and ideas. Their actions and projects are rooted in the fields of art and culture, yet simultaneously extend beyond them. Such transdisciplinary approaches open up opportunities for alliances and emancipatory political resources under precarious living and working conditions.   We understand pirate cultures as a multitude of cultural phenomena that have developed in response to a political climate of commodification and exclusion. Based on a series of self-organized initiatives, this book wants to tell not only of social struggles but also of collective utopian desires. In this context, artistic research is understood as problem-centered, but also as “fantastic and situated.” Kindly supported by Stadt Wien Kultur > Book Release Event (April 2025) © Milena Nowak

PIRATE CULTURES: Unter dem Asphalt der Strand

Pirate Cultures: Unter dem Asphalt der Strand Semmelweisklinik, 1180 Vienna 08. – 16.05.2024 An exhibition organized by the artist collective Sandkasten Syndikat curated by Magdalena Scheicher From May 8th – 16th 2024, the artist collective Sandkasten Syndikat brought a pirate beach to Vienna. The group show was realized together with actors from Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory, RAD Performance, Kollektiv Raumstation, Friends & Partners in Crime. It took place at the imposing former laundry hall of the arts and cultural center Semmelweiklinik, a former hospital in the 18th District of Vienna.   Pirate Cultures: Unter dem Asphalt der Strand (Pirate Cultures: Under the Asphalt, the Beach) revolved around topics of re-appropriation, hijacking and (bio-)hacking, body sovereignity, DIY cultures, commoning, care and the (technology-enabled) self-organization of solidarity networks. Von Pirat*innenschiffen und prekären Bewegungen

Von Pirat*innenschiffen und prekären Bewegungen Publication, Vienna 2024 Text: Magdalena Scheicher Editor: Sandkasten Syndikat/Magdalena Scheicher Grafic/Illustration: Joanna Coleman We published this little booklet accompanying two exhibitions in spring 2024, organized by the artist collective Sandkasten Syndikat.   On May 1st, the artist collective Sandkasten Syndikat hijacked FLUCC Vienna (the ‚cultural steamboat‘ at Praterstern) and sent out an emergency signal to allied cultural workers: MAYDAY!   Together with local actors from Mz* Baltazar’s Laboratory, Kollektiv Raumstation, RAD Performance and friends, we searched for critical-creative answers to precarious living and working conditions. Including a discourse-theoretical debate, the publication brings together narratives of pirate care, civil disobedience and international precarity movements. > Pirate Cultures & Plunder Sonics: MAYDAY! > Pirate Cultures: Unter dem Asphalt der Strand Kindly suppurted by Stadt Wien Kultur
